Pastor Derwin played American football since his college days. He attended Brigham Young University and at the end of his time at the university, he was picked in the 1993 NFL Draft as the 92nd pick. In the NFL, he played for the Indianapolis Colts from 1993 to 1997 and with the Carolina Panthers in 1998.

He ministered the Gospel while studying at the same at the Southern Evangelical Seminary for a Master of Divinity Degree (M.Div.), with a focus in apologetics. Derwing earned his degree when he graduated magna cum laude.
In January 2010, Pastor Derwin became the lead pastor of Transformation Church in South Carolina. He then received a Doctorate of Ministry in the New Testament in Context from Northern Seminary under Dr. Scot McNight.
Pastor Derwin is also a speaker who often gives speeches at various conferences in the U.S. As a result, he is often referred to as the “Evangelism Linebacker”.
