Paola Lázaro is a Puerto Rican actor, playwright, and writer. She is well recognized for her role as Juanita “Princess” Sanchez in AMC’s apocalyptic thriller The Walking Dead (2020-2022).

She was coached by writer Stephen Adly Guirgis during the production of her thesis play at the end of her last year at Columbia. Guirgis considers her a “kindred spirit,” and the two have grown close over the years. His presence has had a significant impact on both her writing and her career. In addition to her thesis production with Guirgis, Lázaro was a member of the Public Theatre’s Emerging Young Writer’s Group, worked on a summer program with Labyrinth Theatre Company, and won an Arts Entertainment Scholarship Award from the National Hispanic Foundation for the Arts. Lázaro was asked to join Atlantic Theatre Company in New York City as playwright-in-residence for the 2016-2017 season after obtaining her M.F.A.
The Tow Foundation established this exclusive playwright-in-residency program, which grants funds to New York City theater groups to assist a playwright’s production of a new work, and centered on Lázaro’s new play, Tell Hector I Miss Him (2017). The play depicts a group of colorful characters battling with love, addiction, and fear in Old San Juan, Puerto Rico. The Atlantic Theatre Company’s performance, directed by David Mendizabal, premiered on January 11, 2017, and was originally slated to close on January 23; however, the run was extended owing to popular demand. According to one reviewer, the play is “Our Town with Salsa and Cocaine.”Lázaro hopes that the play will provide universal themes and characters for Latinos while also highlighting the humanity of her characters.
Lázaro recently appeared in Cherry Lane Theatre’s production of Lisa Ramirez’s To the Bone, a drama based on Ramirez’s interviews with Latina immigrant poultry workers. Lázaro portrayed Lupe, the daughter of Olga (played by Ramirez), a hip-hop, skateboarding political science and law student. Her role in this production is described, and she was nominated for a Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Featured Actress in a Play. In 2017, she appeared in two films as a sex worker in Pimp and an undercover officer in Scenes from the Underground. Lázaro is a staunch believer in the need for Latinos to “write our own stories and create work for ourselves.”Lázaro was cast as Juanita “Princess” Sanchez on AMC’s The Walking Dead in 2020.
