Teale made his television debut in The Mimosa Boys, a film about the Falkland Islands War, in 1984. In 1985, he appeared as “Maldak” in the Doctor Who serial Vengeance on Varos. In 1989, he made his film debut in War Requiem. He later appeared in Knights of God (1989), Great Expectations (1989), The Fifteen Streets (1989), and Boon (1990) before playing Will Scarlet in Robin Hood (1991). He later appeared in Dangerfield, Ballykissangel, The Thin Blue Line, and the long-running Belonging, as well as Spooks and Murphy’s Law. Later, in 1999, he played Lophakin in the film adaptation of The Cherry Orchard, alongside Charlotte Rampling as Ranevskaya and Alan Bates as Gayev.
In Conspiracy, he played the infamous Nazi judge Roland Freisler. He was also in Midsomer Murders and Lewis. He was the abusive husband of Harrison’s eponymous character in Marian, Again, in which he played the lead role. He also provided narration for the BBC’s “Tales from the Green Valley,” one of several farm series he has worked on. He made an appearance in the Torchwood episode “Countrycide” in 2006. He also appeared in the HBO UK TV movie Tsunami: The Aftermath in 2006. He appeared as a guest star in the Doctor Who audio drama The Mind’s Eye in 2007. Teale appeared as Ser Alliser Thorne in Game of Thrones, the HBO TV adaptation of George R. R. Martin’s novel series A Song of Ice and Fire, in 2011, replacing Derek Halligan on short notice. He played this character again in Seasons 4, 5, and 6. In 2012, he starred as Dai in the comedy-drama Stella and as Robert Holland, the fictional UK Foreign Secretary, in the drama Kidnap and Ransom. In the BBC police drama Line of Duty, he also played Chief Constable Osborne. He portrayed Peter Knox in A Discovery of Witches between 2018 and 2022. Dream Horse, a sports comedy-drama film set in Wales, starred him alongside Toni Collette and Damien Lewis in 2020. In 2023, Teale starred as lars Hutton, causing problems on the Kinloch Bravo oil rig in The Rig, in a cast that included Iain Glen, Emily Hampshire, Mark Addy, and Martin Compston. He has also worked as a voiceover artist for television advertisements.
