Career
He started his career as a radio announcer in Chicago in 1965. She was a reporter for WKYC-TV in Cleveland for three years and was the first African-American woman to write stories for the station. She then moved to WNBC in New York, where she anchored the local morning news. While at WNBC, she was asked to replace Barbara Walters on the “Today” show, but declined the offer because NBC feared a backlash from southern viewers. In 1977, Quarles began producing “City Stories” for WMAQ-TV in Chicago. The success of the series earned him the name of NBC’s national correspondent. In 1984, she chaired the debate on the vice president. In 1988, Quarles joined CNN as a CNN Daybreak correspondent. She hosted the show for two years before switching to reporter in 1999. He later served as a correspondent for PBS’s Faith & Justice News Weekly, retiring in 2001. Quarles has also appeared in many films. He played a reporter in “Last Day at the Disco” and was an extra in “Miracle on 34th Street.”
