Butz, the son of Elaine (née Bourisaw) and Norbert Butz, was born in St. Louis, Missouri, on January 30, 1967. Playing the male leads in nearby all-girl high schools like Cor Jesu Academy and Nerinx Hall was among his first theater roles. From Bishop DuBourg High School, he graduated.
Butz graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Webster University’s Conservatory of Theatre Arts and a Master of Fine Arts from the Professional Actor Training Program of the Alabama Shakespeare Festival and the University of Alabama. 2013 saw him get an honorary degree from Webster University. Butz was a member of the original cast that debuted the show on Broadway and played the role of the original Fiyero during the San Francisco production’s tryout. Butz hurt his back shortly after the show’s premiere and had to take a seven-week hiatus. His understudy at the time, Kristoffer Cusick, filled in for him, followed by Taye Diggs. Along with Kristin Chenoweth and Joel Grey, he made a comeback to the show in January 2004 and departed it permanently on July 14, 2004. In Justified: City Primeval, a limited series that follows the first Justified, Norbert plays Norbert Bryl. In “City Primeval,” Deputy U.S. Marshal Raylan Givens and Detroit Police Department homicide detective Norbert Bryl collaborate to find the person who placed a bomb in Judge Alvin Guy’s vehicle. Materials to make bombs are discovered, but no suspects.
Marcus “Sweety” Sweeton is arrested by Norbert and Detective Wendell Robinson after they question Clement Mansell, the main suspect in the Judge Guy case. After questioning Clement, they discover he is not a master criminal and that he could receive a life sentence. They meet Skender Lulgjuraj, an Albanian they are trying to con, and then take part in a sting operation to track Clement and Sandy.
In “Kokomo,” Skender Lulgjuraj is disabled in a car accident, despite Norbert and Raylan’s attempts to accuse him. When Clement Mansell drives by, they discover Agron Drake dead. In “Adios,” Norbert takes part in a sting to find Clement in possession of a book containing secrets for blackmail. They discover that the main suspect in the murders is a homeless veteran of Afghanistan named Darrold Woods.

In 1996, Butz made his Broadway debut in Rent as a replacement swing, a kind of understudy. In 1997, Butz finally took Adam Pascal’s role as Roger. Further Broadway credits include Dirty Rotten Scoundrels (Freddy), for which he won the Tony Award for Best Leading Actor in a Musical, the Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Actor in a Musical, the Drama League Award, and the Outer Critics Circle Award. Among Butz’s projects are the October 2007 release of the film Dan in Real Life (starring Steve Carell, Juliette Binoche, and Dane Cook); the world premiere of Is He Dead?, a play by Mark Twain that had not before been produced; and Fifty Words Off-Broadway, starring Elizebeth Marvel, which debuted on December 9, 2007 at the Lucille Lortel Theatre (2008). He made an appearance as Captain Richard King in the Comanche Moon miniseries, which was adapted from the Lonesome Dove prequel, in January 2008.
He made a comeback to the Broadway stage in ENRON, playing Jeffrey Skilling, from April to May 9, 2010. The play had trouble selling tickets even though it received Tony nominations. In the musical Catch Me If You Can, Butz created the part of Carl Hanratty. The show’s pre-Broadway auditions took place in Seattle, Washington’s 5th Avenue Theatre from July 28 to August 14, 2009. Catch Me if You Can was a Broadway performance that ran from April 10, 2011, to September 11, 2011, with Butz playing Carl Hanratty. He received his second Tony Award for Best Actor in a Musical and his second Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Actor in a Musical for this performance.
Butz starred alongside Josh Hamilton, Judy Greer, Jayne Houdyshell, Katie Holmes, and Theresa Rebeck in Dead Accounts, which ran on Broadway from November 29, 2012, to January 6, 2013.
