O’Donnell is married to Geoff Tracy, a restaurateur and owner of Chef Geoff’s, the small chain of restaurants in D.C. O’Donnell was a staff writer for Roll Call, covering Congress. She worked for the NBC networks for twelve years. O’Donnell was a Today Show contributor, Chief Washington Correspondent for MSNBC, and NBC News White House correspondent. She was also a contributing anchor for MSNBC Live and an anchor for Weekend Today. O’Donnell contributed to NBC News shows such as NBC Nightly News, The Today Show, Dateline NBC, and MSNBC. O’Donnell hosted Hardball with Chris Matthews in place of Chris Matthews and was a regular analyst on The Chris Matthews Show. Since joining CBS, she has worked as an anchor on several of the network’s most popular shows, as well as filling in for Scott Pelley on the CBS Evening News several times.

O’Donnell was diagnosed with melanoma ‘in situ,’ which means the cancer was limited to the epidermis and had not migrated to the dermis or metastasized. Soon after, she underwent surgery in which a “three-inch-long piece of skin from the upper left corner of [her] back” was removed. She later revealed that she now had “every three to four months” skin check-ups and “multiple skin biopsies.” O’Donnell has become a skincare ambassador in the years since her diagnosis, pushing others, particularly women, to get regular dermatological check-ups and take better care of their skin by performing excellent skin care habits such as utilizing sunscreen. In 2017, she opened out about her condition with her dermatologist on CBS This Morning.
