In the episode “Pen Pals” from the second season of Star Trek: The Next Generation, Cox portrayed Sarjenka. Born on Drema IV, Sarjenka was a young Dreman woman. She shared a home with her brothers and parents.

For eight weeks in 2365, she had been in communication with Lieutenant Commander Data via an RF transmitter. He realized that the extraordinarily high concentration of dilithium lattices in the planet’s crust was causing geological movements that were tearing her planet apart.

At first, Captain Picard gave Data the order to cut off communication with Sarjenka in order to stop any more Prime Directive violations.But after Data persuaded the captain to step in, the USS Enterprise-D crew was eventually able to halt the geological upheavals by using specially designed probes to destroy the crystals.

In an effort to mitigate the effects of the Enterprise-D crew’s contamination, Picard gave Doctor Pulaski the order to remove Sarjenka’s short-term memory. However, Data gave her the Elanin singing stone she had seen in sickbay as part of the process of bringing her back to Drema IV, allowing her to retain a little piece of her experience.
