Nicole Shanahan is an American entrepreneur, attorney, patent professional, and the founder and CEO of ‘ClearAccessIP,’ an integrated patent management platform. She is currently a research fellow at the ‘Stanford Center for Legal Informatics,’ which is a collaboration between the ‘Stanford Law School’ and ‘Computer Science.’

In 2009, Shanahan worked as a patent specialist at ‘Townsend and Townsend and Crew, LLP. She began working as an IP paralegal and database specialist for the law firm ‘Rutan & Tucker, LLP’ in Costa Mesa, Orange County (March 2009 – April 2010). Shanahan worked briefly as a patent specialist at the start-up phase of the financial service provider company ‘RPX Corporation’ in March 2010. She worked independently with several start-up companies with ‘PDB Patent Data’ to help them optimize their patent data efforts. Shanahan founded and is the CEO of the automated patent management and valuation company ‘ClearAccessIP’ in January 2013.
She worked for several law firms and later a licensing company for four years before deciding to start her own business. While in law school, she worked on assembling an outstanding technical team, which provided a framework for her concept. Shanahan was featured in the cover story of the ‘American Bar Association journal in April 2014, ‘Self Starters: Women Are Squarely in the Picture Where Law and Technology Combine.’ That month, she launched the first live beta of her ‘Zero-Touch Patent Docketing’ service for patent trial attorneys and in-house patent management teams. Shanahan’s first company was formed as a result of the start-up.
From July 2014 to the present, Shanahan has been a residential research fellow at ‘The Stanford Center for Legal Informatics’. She is involved in ‘CodeX-related research projects such as the ‘Stanford OpenData Initiative,’ as well as developing legal and social solutions. Shanahan facilitated a collaboration between ‘CodeX’ and the San Francisco District Attorney’s Office to contribute to the latter’s blue-ribbon ‘Task Force Investigating Police Misconduct project’s data analysis. She is working on the ‘Smart Prosecution’ project and developing an economic theory called ‘Coasean Mapping’ to forecast the movement and nature of legal artificial intelligence.
