During his junior and senior years, he and his classmates created an offbeat skit comedy program that was broadcast on the school’s television station. While working on the show, Zano also authored, starred in, and directed student films that were selected for the JVC Universal Film Competition, in which over 800 local high schools compete. Zano relocated to Hanover, Pennsylvania, shortly after graduating from high school, and obtained a position creating films and television ideas for a small production firm. He was also an associate producer for Living Position, a World AIDS Day television special hosted by Lou Diamond Phillips at the time.

In 2003, he was cast as Vince in the WB sitcom What I Like About You, which starred Amanda Bynes and Jennie Garth. Zano debuted in the second season and remained until the fourth and final season, which concluded on March 24, 2006. Following that, he hosted and executive produced his MTV reality show Why Can’t I Be You? In April 2010, Zano attended the Tribeca Film Festival premiere of Earth Made of Glass. The next year, Zano co-starred in the independent romance comedy My Sexiest Year with Haylie Duff and Frankie Muniz. The film had its international premiere at the 2007 Hamptons International Film Festival, where it got mixed reviews. He appears in a supporting role opposite Drake Bell in 2008.

In 2011, he began recurring as Johnny, a graffiti artist who frequently flirts with Max (Kat Dennings) on 2 Broke Girls. In 2011, he also played Brandon in the romance comedy Scents and Sensibility. In 2012, Zano appeared in a recurring role on another CW show, 90210, as a billionaire who partners with Annie (Shenae Grimes). Zano co-starred with Laura Vandervoort in the ABC family Christmas drama Desperately Seeking Santa on November 27, 2011. Beginning in December 2012, Zano appeared as Pete, Penny’s new love interest, in season three of the ABC sitcom Happy Endings. For two episodes in 2013, Zano played Anna Faris’ (primary character’s) boyfriend on Mom.

Zano signed on to play the male lead in Liz Feldman and Ellen DeGeneres’ NBC comedy pilot One Big Happy in February 2014. The plot revolves around Lizzy (Elisha Cuthbert), a lesbian who becomes pregnant just as her straight male best friend Luke (the child’s father), played by Zano, meets and marries Prudence, the love of his life. The programme was picked up for a second season on May 9, 2014, and premiered in early 2015. In the Fox drama Minority Report, based on the 2002 Steven Spielberg film of the same name, Zano played as Arthur, who was described as having a hard shell as a result of years of harsh experience in the outside world that Dash avoided.
