Career

Young’s broadcasting career began in his hometown in 1968. After graduating from the University of Missouri School of Journalism in 1971, Young joined WLW Radio in Cincinnati, Ohio, where he hosted a nightly call-in talk show. In 1975, Young moved to radio station WEEI in Boston, Massachusetts, as a host. Four years later, he landed a morning job at WHDH in Boston, hosted by Jess Cain. While at WHDH, he was part of a team that had success on several major local stories, including the chemistry episode selected for Broadcast by Sigma Delta Chi, a society of professional journalists.

In the summer of 1983, Young moved to New York to become a reporter for RKO/United Station/Unistar Radio Networks. For the next seven years, he covered the hourly news and many major events. He also hosted the weekly Newsweek Live with David Alpern from 1983 to 1984. In 1990, Young joined CBS News. Over the next two years, Young covered many of today’s biggest stories: Him. The J. Simpson trial, the aftermath of the Oklahoma City bombing, the Mike Tyson rape trial, political rallies, the national movement, the Persian Gulf War, the 9-11 attacks, Mother Teresa’s funeral, and other important works. In 2006, he was chosen to replace World News Roundup host Christopher Glenn, who announced his retirement in February. On March 25, 2010, Young announced his retirement from CBS News.
