Natasha Exelby ABC

In 2017, Exelby started filling in as a relaxed news moderator on the Australian Telecom Partnership’s news station ABC News. On Saturday, April 8, 2017, Exelby was reading a late-night ABC News report when she was briefly distracted by her pen and did not realize she was on air following the conclusion of a story. Exelby gasped when she realized she was on air and hurriedly introduced Meredith Sheehan’s sports segment.

The video went viral after it was highlighted on Media Watch’s social media pages. Following this, numerous publications reported that Exelby had been punished by the ABC and removed from the air due to the virality of her blooper. Numerous messages of support from fellow journalists, television presenters, politicians, and entertainers, as well as the emergence of the hashtag #putyourbloopersout, were sent in response to the notion that Exelby had been fired.

Anyway ABC news chief Gaven Morris has denied Exelby was terminated, depicting the numerous media reports as “false” on the grounds that Exelby was an independent columnist and as such was not rostered for any extra on air moves. An earlier statement made by an ABC spokesperson also stated that Exelby was a “casual contributor” rather than a staff member and was only booked for occasional on-air shifts. Morris’ statement came after that earlier statement.

Some commentators maintained that Exelby had in fact been punished and accused Morris of lying. Exelby also claims that after the blooper, ABC informed her that she was unable to go live on air again and offered her producing shifts instead.
