Barnes was the head news executive at NPR before joining The Boston Globe in 2023. From 2003 to 2013, he was the editor of the Minneapolis Star Tribune, and from 2013 to 2018, he was the editor and executive vice president of news for the Houston Chronicle. While Barnes was editor of the Star Tribune, the publication earned the Pulitzer Prize for local news in 2013 for its coverage of newborn mortality in day care facilities. It also received the Gerald Loeb Award for Breaking News, as well as two Edward R. Murrow Awards for multimedia journalism in 2013. The Chronicle earned the Pulitzer Prize for commentary in 2015 while she was editor.
It was a Pulitzer finalist in 2017 for reporting on the denial of special education services to tens of thousands of Texas students, and a finalist in 2018 for Hurricane Harvey coverage. Barnes took over at NPR after Michael Oreskes was ousted due to sexual harassment claims. Barnes is the thirteenth and fourth female leader of NPR’s news section since the job was established in 1979. The Boston Globe announced on November 14, 2022, that Barnes would become its 13th editor and the first woman to oversee the Globe’s newsroom.
