Williamson began professionally acting as a child. Starsky and Hutch, Father Murphy, Hill Street Blues, Miami Vice, China Beach, and Midnight Caller were among his first television appearances. His most well-known television role was as Donovan Aderhold in the syndicated series The New WKRP in Cincinnati. Williamson also appeared in the PBS television series The Righteous Apples. The show follows the activities of The Righteous Apples, a group of five Boston-area high school musicians who, in a troubled world, try to help those in need. Williamson was the lead singer of the group in the show when he was only a teenager. Streets of Fire (1984) was his feature film debut.
Williamson is best known for his role in the Academy Award-winning 1994 film Forrest Gump as Private Benjamin Buford “Bubba” Blue. In the HBO film Soul of the Game (1996), he portrayed Negro League baseball player Josh Gibson. Williamson has made numerous television and film appearances. Ali (2001), The Assassination of Richard Nixon (2004), Get Rich or Die Tryin’ (2005), ATL (2006), Lucky Number Slevin (2006), August Rush (2007), High School (2010), and Convergence (2015) are his most recent film appearances. He played Juror #10 in the 1997 TV movie remake of 12 Angry Men, replacing Ed Begley. He also appeared in the CBS TV series remake The Fugitive (2000-2001). CBS canceled the series after one season and 22 episodes.
In 2002, he co-starred in the critically acclaimed but commercially unsuccessful crime drama Boomtown as Detective Bobby “Fearless” Smith. Between 2007 and 2009, he appeared as Chief Sinclair in seven episodes of CSI: NY, reuniting him with his Forrest Gump co-star Gary Sinise. He starred as Brian Hastings, the special agent in charge of the New York CTU, in season 8 of 24. He appeared as Ellstin Limehouse in the FX drama Justified. He was also cast as Terry, a homeless man, in the third season of the ABC drama Nashville. Williamson has played Admiral Chernow in Designated Survivor since October 2016. He first appeared on Chicago P.D. in 2017.
