Calhoun made her acting debut in the 1985 television picture Children of the Night, as Wanda. She played Phyllis, the daughter of CCH Pounder’s character, in Bagdad Cafe (1987). Calhoun was the only actor from Bagdad Cafe who returned for the television series, albeit the character’s name was altered to Debbie. The TV adaption ran for two seasons before being terminated. She played Rebbie Jackson in the 1992 biographical miniseries The Jacksons: An American Dream. In 1993, she played a brief role in Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit and costarred with Morris Chestnut in the Disney Channel film The Ernest Green Story. Calhoun received an Emmy Award nomination for her role in the CBS Schoolbreak Special “Different Worlds: A Story of Interracial Love” (1993).
Calhoun appeared on numerous sitcoms, including The Wayans Bros., A Different World, and The Jamie Foxx Show, the latter as Jamie Foxx’s sister. She portrayed Linda, one of Donald Thornton’s kids, in the 1997 television film The Ditchdigger’s kids.Calhoun starred as Ebony, a stripper, in Ice Cube’s directorial debut, The Players Club (1998). Intimate Betrayal (1999) featured her in the lead role of Reese Delaware. In the film Love & Basketball (2000), she played Kerry, the protagonist’s girlfriend. Calhoun played Dr. Mia DuBois, a psychotherapist, in Trois 2: Pandora’s Box in 2002, and Wet in Civil Brand. Calhoun portrayed Rachel in the Western Gang of Roses (2003).
Calhoun played Mia, the wife of Morris Chestnut’s character, in The Best Man (1999). Her portrayal earned her an NAACP Image Award nomination for Outstanding Actress in a Motion Picture in 2000. She returned for the sequel, The Best Man Holiday (2013). In the latter, Mia is terminally ill and dies at the end of the film. She played Brenda in the 2007 film The Salon, which starred Vivica Fox. Robert Townsend directed Calhoun in Diary of a Single Mom, Seasons I, II, and III (2008–2010). Calhoun portrayed Ralph’s mother, Patricia Tresvant, in the miniseries The New Edition Story, which premiered on BET in January 2017.
