He worked for the Beverly Hills Independent and the Ukiah Daily Journal after graduating. In 1980, he joined the Associated Press, where he worked for 19 years as a writer, editor, and foreign correspondent before joining the Times in 1999. He covered local and national politics for the Times, including the 2000 Florida recount, the 2003 California governor recall election, and the 2010 Haiti catastrophe. Landsberg was one of three journalists named when the Los Angeles Times received the Pulitzer Prize for Breaking News Reporting in 2004 for “compelling and comprehensive coverage of the massive wildfires that imperiled a populated region of southern California.” He was the primary journalist for a 70-person team covering the fires. His reporting helped the newspaper earn the 2005 Pulitzer Prize for Public Service. He and three other journalists were recognized for a “courageous, exhaustively researched series exposing deadly medical problems and racial injustice at a major public hospital,” the King/Drew Medical Center.
