Coleman began working for The Washington Post in 1976 and was promoted to deputy managing editor in 1996. He was a key figure in the newspaper’s strategy and development of zoned editions, as well as in improving its coverage of Latinos, including news in Spanish. In April 2010, he was elected president of the American Society of News Editors, and in October 2011, he was elected president of the Inter American Press Association. He has also served on the Pulitzer Prize nominating committee, as a judge for the Robert F. Kennedy Journalism Award, the National Association of Black Journalists, and the Asian American Journalists Association awards, and as chairman of the Seldon Ring Award for Investigative Reporting judging committee.
