Philip Zimbardo investigates the hypothesis that participants’ behavior is influenced by roles in social situations rather than individual personality traits. He chooses eighteen male students to take part in a 14-day prison simulation as prisoners or guards. Due to psychological breakdowns, two students who played prisoners left the experiment early. He abruptly ends the experiment after only six days after being chastised and roughly brought back to reality by his girlfriend Christina Maslach.
