Mike Walsh Career
From 1973 to 1985, Walsh was the host of The Mike Walsh Show. Before moving to the Nine Network, the program first screened on the 0-10 network, which was the precursor to Network Ten. Walsh took home a Gold Logie, and it won 24 Logies.
In 1974, the program was famous for introducing Jeanne Little, another Gold Logie winner. In an effort to revive nighttime variety, The Mike Walsh Show eventually switched to a nighttime format after gaining such a large following in the midday time slot.
The plan was to move the Mike Walsh Show’s popularity to the nighttime slot while maintaining the midday show with a new host. Walsh stated on the midday show that “there was only one choice for the new host and frankly if he had said no, we wouldn’t have gone to night time” following speculation regarding the host. Ray Martin will host the midday show in the coming year.” Possibly due to Martin’s popularity as a 60 Minutes reporter, the announcement was met with rapturous applause and cheering. For thirteen years, Ray Martin hosted the Midday Show.
After a few weeks, the nighttime show with Walsh was a failure and was cancelled. In 1987, he appeared on television for a 12-week music and chat show on ABC. He is the only person to have won both the Sammy and Gold Logie awards in the same year. He has totaled 24 Logies and seven Sammys.
Walsh was the executive producer of Nunsense and Anything Goes, two musicals that were hugely successful. Since 2006, Walsh has produced plays in Sydney and London, both in Australia and on London’s West End. He bought Richmond’s Regent Theatre in 1977 and built a twin cinema complex in Penrith in 1982. He then bought the Avalon and two other movie theaters. Since 2000, he has owned and funded the restoration of Melbourne’s Her Majesty’s Theatre. In addition, Walsh owns the Hayden Orpheum Picture Palace, which he bought in 1986. This six-screen art deco complex in Cremorne, Sydney, features a 1925 Wurlitzer orchestral pipe organ and was restored for $2.5 million.
Since 1996, Walsh has provided funding for the Mike Walsh Fellowships, which allow young performers to improve their skills in Australia and overseas. He has contributed $50,000 (originally $30,000) annually to the fellowships since 2006. By 2015, more than 90 Fellows had received over $700,000 as a result. In 1980, Walsh was given the Order of the British Empire as a tribute. He was made a Member of the Order of Australia in 2016 for his significant contributions to the entertainment industry as well as the performing arts by supporting young actors and restoring and producing theaters.
