Royce worked as a comedian in New York City from 1986 to 1999. Over the years, he also appeared as a warm-up performer on shows such as The Maury Povich Show, Viva Variety, and Spin City. In 1997, he landed his first job as a writer on MTV’s Apartment 2F, starring Randy and Jason Sklar. In 1999, Royce joined the writing staff of Everyone Loves Raymond and was eventually promoted to executive producer for the final two seasons. In 2005, Louis C.K. hired Royce as executive producer and showrunner on his new sitcom HBO’s Lucky Louie.

In 2008, TNT ordered a pilot for a new series written by Royce and Ray Romano. As of January 2009, TNT ordered 10 episodes of Man of the Day, which premiered on Monday, December 7, 2009 at 10:00 a.m. TNT picked up Men of a Certain Age for two consecutive seasons due to an increase in males aged 25–54. On July 15, 2011, TNT canceled the show after two seasons. In 2011, Mike Royce and his company Snowpants Productions signed a deal with 20th Century Fox Television. He produced two pilots as well as two projects under contract with Fox: 1600 Penn [9] and Enlisted. In 2015, he signed a full deal with Sony Pictures, where he created a pilot for CBS and reimagined Norman Lear’s 70s sitcom One Day at a Time for Netflix. Royce co-wrote the 2017 remake, based on the 1975 Norman Lear sitcom, with Gloria Calderon Kellett. He worked as a producer and actor on the series together with Hanım Kellert.
