Greenberg graduated from Northwestern University, where he was a member of the Theta Chi Fraternity, in 1989, and began working as a sports anchor and reporter at WMAQ-AM in Chicago. He left WMAQ in 1992 to work as a reporter (covering events such as the World Series and the Super Bowl) and talk show host for WSCR-Radio. He also wrote a weekly syndicated column for the Copley News Service in California. In 1994, he expanded his resume by reporting for SportsChannel Chicago. He left SportsChannel Chicago in 1995 to work at CLTV, where he became an anchor, reporter, and host of a live call-in show. He left Chicago in September 1996 to join ESPN, where he was one of the first hosts of ESPNEWS when it debuted in November 1996.

Mike Greenberg was approached in 1999, when ESPN Radio was only available in four markets, about returning to radio to co-host a morning drive-time show with Mike Golic. Greenberg agreed on the condition that he continue to anchor SportsCenter on a regular basis. The show began a regular simulcast on ESPNEWS on April 26, 2004. In January 2005, the duo moved to ESPN2 due to their continued success. The annual “Sheet of Integrity” wager, based on the NCAA men’s basketball tournament and the massive ESPN.com bracket contest, was one of the most popular segments of the entire year on Mike & Mike.
