Michael Bettes is an award-winning meteorologist and storm chaser working for The Weather Channel as the co-host of AMHQ: America’s Morning Headquarters in Atlanta, Georgia. Since the start of the 2003 weather channel in El Reno, including the Joplin tornado, in 2011, and in 2013 the El Reno tornado, Oklahoma, e covered nearly every extreme weather event. In 2009 and 2010, he participated in this elusive phenomenon in the largest tornado field trial in history, Vortex 2.

Bettes covered almost every imaginable weather throughout his career. He’s been living in blizzards, floods, wildfires, and regular hurricanes. He experienced some of the worst storms in U.S. history during his tenure on The Weather Channel. In 2004, Hurricane Ivan reported living in Florida. During Hurricane Katrina in 2005, he spent a week along the Mississippi coast. In 2008, he recorded a 101mph wind personally when Hurricane Ike hit Texas. In 2017, the hurricane season proved to be extremely dangerous. The Hurricane Harvey rain has flooded most southeastern Texas, and Mike was at the scene.

Only two weeks later Mike broadcast 90 minutes straight inside Hurricane Irma’s corridor, which recorded winds at 130mph in Naples, Florida. Mike was in Panhandle when Hurricane Category 5 hit Florida. Bettes was previously the chief meteorologist at WLOS-TV in Asheville, N.C. He has spent four years as a WSYX/WTTE weekend meteorologist in Columbus, Ohio, and one year as a WKEF weekend in Dayton, Oh. Bettes holds a seal of approval from the American Meteorological Society and from the NWA. Mike enjoys watching college soccer and training in his spare time.

Hiking, paddles, mountain bicycle and triathlons also are his favorites. His golden retriever Joplyn was also known to be spoiled.
