In 2006, he began working as a general assignment reporter for WRC-TV in Washington, D.C. On April 2, 2009, Almaguer was hired by NBC News as a reporter in Burbank, California, to report for all of the network’s divisions, including NBC Nightly News, Today, and MSNBC. During the Today show on November 4, 2022, Almaguer reported on the assault on Paul Pelosi, citing an unidentified source who said Pelosi told San Francisco police there was no sign he was in danger when he answered the door.
The police report was deemed incorrect because it indicated Pelosi was fighting with the intruder, David DePape, when they arrived at his residence. However, according to one source, NBC station KNTV in San Francisco stated that Pelosi opened the door after viewing police body camera footage. NBC News later pulled the video story from the Today website, citing that it “did not meet NBC News reporting standards.” Almaguer was suspended from NBC News on November 14, according to The Daily Beast. Almaguer returned to NBC Nightly News on December 12 after a four-week break to report on the mid-December blizzard that affected parts of the United States.
