Michaela Strachan Career
Strachan was a Saturday-morning television presenter in the 1980s, appearing on shows such Good Morning Britain and Wide Awake Club alongside Timmy Mallett. In 1988, she hosted Boogie Box on Music Box, a music channel. Strachan co-starred with Pete Waterman as “Her” on the nightclub-themed music show The Hitman and Her from 1988 until 1992. Strachan joined BBC1’s Really Wild Show, a wildlife programme for children, in 1993.
She was a regular correspondent for BBC One’s Countryfile for many years before the show underwent a primetime Sunday evening facelift in April 2009. Her transfer to South Africa kept her from completely committing to the new show. Strachan competed in the World Gurning competition at the Egremont Crab Fair while recording a Countryfile segment in 2002. To her amazement, she won the Ladies’ World Gurning Crown.
Strachan and Steve Leonard co-presented two seasons of Orangutan Diary on BBC One. The series focused on the everyday routines of an orphaned orangutan reserve in Borneo, as well as the efforts of Lone Drøscher Nielsen and her crew to rescue and rehabilitate the animals. They aired in 2006 and 2008. She told The Independent that her greatest motivation is Nielsen, who “works under very difficult conditions and shows an all-consuming dedication to these animals”.
She hosted the six-part series The Great Penguin Rescue for the Eden channel in 2013. She competed in the second season of the celebrity diving television show Splash! in 2014. In 2022, Channel 5 premiered Digging For Treasure: Tonight, which Strachan co-presented with Dan Walker and archaeologist Raksha Dave.
