McKenzie Westmore Career

He is a member of the Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity and a 1961 graduate of the University of California-Santa Barbara. He started as a make-up artist for Universal Studios in 1961 and was promoted to Assistant Department Head of Make-Up after three years. In the 1963 film The List of Adrian Messenger, he worked as an apprentice to John Chambers. The Munsters and Land of the Lost were two of Westmore’s first assignments at Universal. During the 1970s and 1980s, he worked as a freelance make-up artist on films including Rocky and Raging Bull. Westmore created the prosthetic noses worn by Robert De Niro throughout the film, as well as the make-up that simulated bleeding through tubes implanted beneath artificial skin for Raging Bull.

A special effect that depicted a nose cracking from a punch on screen was one of the most bizarre effects employed in the boxing film. He collaborated with Tom Burman on make-up sets for the CIA’s overseas operators to disguise themselves. In 2011, a set built by the two sold for $20,000. Looking Your Best with Michael Westmore, a VHS video published in 1985, featured him. He joined Star Trek: The Next Generation in 1986 and went on to work on Deep Space Nine, Voyager, and Enterprise.

He went into semi-retirement after Star Trek and worked on the musical adaptation of Mask, having previously worked on the film adaptation. In the Shankar-directed Indian Tamil film ‘INDIAN,’ he was in charge of Kamal Haasan’s make-up. He also worked for eighteen months on the Indian film Dasavathaaram, in which Kamal Haasan portrayed ten different parts, each of which necessitated the use of prosthetics. He’s started working as a producer and plans to publish a two-volume autobiography.

He was first hesitant to work on a television show because his prior experience had only been with feature films, but after talking it over with his wife, he decided that a year-long project was a good idea. During his time on the shows, he worked on the make-up for a variety of alien races, including the Ferengi, Cardassians, and Jem’Hadar, as well as the Klingons. One of his first responsibilities was to build the make-up for Brent Spiner’s portrayal of Data. Following the termination of Enterprise in 2005, he quit the Star Trek franchise.
