Usher began his broadcast career as a final year cadet journalist at the Golden West broadcast Network in Bunbury in 1990. He was then assigned to Kalgoorlie before starting at STW-9 in Perth the following year. Usher relocated to Sydney and joined TCN-9 News. Three years later, he was named Nine Network Olympics reporter, in charge of the network’s coverage of the 1996 Atlanta and 2000 Sydney Olympic Games. He also went to Lausanne to cover the International Olympic Committee’s corruption crisis. He was the Nine Network’s correspondent in New York when the Twin Towers were struck in September 2001, and he was in Iraq less than two years later, traveling north from Kuwait to Baghdad the day after the Coalition took control.

Usher moved to the Nine Network’s US bureau in 2001, where he served as a National Nine News US correspondent stationed in Los Angeles for three years. Usher returned to Australia to fill in as presenter of Today, then in early 2004, he went to the United Kingdom with his wife Anna and their young son to cover the London bureau. Usher returned to Australia in 2006 to take over as host of Nightline, replacing Ellen Fanning. Usher joined the Sunday show as a news anchor in 2007. Following the cancellation of Nightline in July 2008 and Sunday in August 2008, he was named presenter of the short-lived Nine News Sunday AM, and he filled-in on different Nine News bulletins for the rest of 2008.

Usher hosted Nine News Sydney’s weekend bulletin from November 2008 to January 2009. This occurred following Mike Munro’s resignation and prior to the appointment of former weeknight presenter Mark Ferguson as the permanent weekend host. Also in 2009, Usher stepped down as host of the Sunday Morning News, which was replaced by Weekend Today. Usher was hired as a permanent reporter for 60 Minutes in March 2009. Prior to the 2010 Australian Federal Election, he presented the first leaders debate between Julia Gillard and Tony Abbott.Usher hosted A Current Affair in December 2010 while regular fill-in host Leila McKinnon was on vacation. He and Alicia Gorey also co-hosted the 2010 New Year’s Eve Fireworks. In October 2016, Usher joined the Seven Network and replaced Melissa Doyle as weekend presenter on Seven News Sydney. In December 2018, Usher was appointed the presenter of The Latest: Seven News.
