September Rapaport was born in New York City. His parents are radio personality June Brody and radio executive David Rapaport, who oversaw the All-Disco format at WKTU Disco 92. Through his father’s previous marriage, he has an elder half-sister, Claudia Lonow (née Rapaport), and a brother, Eric Rapaport. Rapaport’s mother wed comedian Mark Lonow, who co-owned The Improv with Budd Friedman, following his parents’ divorce.

At the age of 19, Rapaport relocated to Los Angeles, California in 1989 in an attempt to pursue a career in stand-up comedy. Rapaport’s entry into the stand-up industry was facilitated by his stepfather, comedian Mark Lonow, who co-owned The Improv with Budd Friedman. He spent three years doing it. China Beach, a television series, gave him his big acting break.
