Lind is a fifth-generation Central Texan descended from Swedish, English, Scottish, and perhaps German Jewish ancestors. He was born in Austin and attended Austin public schools. Charles Ray Lind, his father, was an assistant attorney general in Texas, and Marcia Hearon Lind, his mother, was a public school teacher and administrator.
He graduated with honors from the University of Texas at Austin’s Plan II Liberal Arts Honors Program in 1982. In 1985, he earned a master’s degree in International Relations from Yale University, and in 1988, he earned a J.D. from the University of Texas Law School.

Michael Lind Land of Promise
Lind’s 2012 book, Land of Promise: An Economic History of the United States, was released by HarperCollins. It focuses on the causes and consequences of history rather than sequential narratives to cover the economic history of the United States from the Revolutionary War through the Great Recession. The book is anti-libertarian, saying that the strengths and problems of the American economy are primarily attributable to the Hamiltonian legacy and the Jeffersonian school. Despite its focus on the past, Land of Promise also looks ahead, speculating on the future of the American economy. The book concludes on a positive note, realizing that failure is a choice.

Lind worked for The Legacy Establishment’s State Division Evaluation Undertaking from 1988-90. Subsequent to filling in as right hand to the head of the U.S. Express Division’s Middle for the Investigation of International concerns from 1990-91, he was chief supervisor of The Public Premium from 1991-94. He was a proofreader at Harper’s Magazine from 1994-95, a senior manager at The New Republic from 1995-96, a staff essayist at The New Yorker from 1996-97, and Washington Reporter for Harper’s Magazine from 1998-99.
In 1999 he helped to establish the New America Establishment (presently New America) with Ted Halstead, Sherle Schwenninger, and Walter Russell Mead. At New America from 1999-2017 he was at different times Whitehead Senior Individual, prime supporter and co-overseer of the American System Task, co-overseer of the Following Common agreement Drive and an ASU Eventual fate of War Individual.
Beginning around 2017, he has been a teacher at the Lyndon B. Johnson School of Public Undertakings at the College of Texas at Austin. He has shown seminars on American majority rules government, American political economy and American international strategy at Harvard, Johns Hopkins, and Virginia Tech’s Arlington grounds.
