Michael Dell Career

Dell began an informal business assembling and selling upgrade kits for personal computers in Room 2713 of the Dobie Center residential building as a freshman pre-med student at the University of Texas. He then applied for a vendor license in order to bid on contracts for the State of Texas, and he was successful because he did not have the overhead of a computer store. In January 1984, Dell staked his reputation on his belief that the potential cost savings of a manufacturer selling PCs directly outweighed the traditional indirect retail channel. Dell registered his company as “PC’s Limited” in January 1984. Operating out of a condominium, the company sold PC upgrades, kits, and add-on components worth $50,000 to $80,000. Dell incorporated the company in May.

He became the youngest CEO of a company on Fortune magazine’s list of the top 500 corporations in 1992, at the age of 27.  Dell began selling computers over the Internet in 1996, the same year his company launched its first servers. Dell Inc. soon reported $1 million in daily sales from dell.com.Dell Inc. surpassed Compaq to become the world’s largest PC manufacturer in the first quarter of 2001, with a global market share of 12.8%. The metric marked the first time in seven years that the rankings had shifted. At a time when competitors’ sales were declining, the company’s combined shipments of desktops, notebooks, and servers increased 34.3 percent globally and 30.7 percent in the United States.

Dell established MSD Capital L.P. in 1998 to manage his family’s investments. Publicly traded securities, private equity, and real estate are all examples of investment activities. The firm has 80 employees and offices in New York, Santa Monica, and London. Dell is not involved in the day-to-day operations.  Dell stepped down as CEO on March 4, 2004, but remained chairman of Dell Inc.’s board, and Kevin Rollins, then president and COO, took over as president and CEO.
