His first employment were as a production assistant on movie sets, cleaning horse stalls, and mowing lawns. Cogdill started his television career two weeks after graduating from college, working at Wilmington, North Carolina’s WECT, an NBC affiliate. He quickly switched to Wilmington’s ABC station, WWAY, and then moved to Augusta, Georgia’s WRDW-TV, which was affiliated with CBS. In 1989, he made his way to the NBC affiliate WYFF in Greenville, South Carolina, where he solidified his status as maybe the most accomplished anchorman in South Carolina television history.
When Cogdill covered the case of Susan Smith, a Union, South Carolina mother found guilty in 1994 of killing her two small boys, he first gained notoriety. After winning an Emmy in 1996 for Susan Smith: A Question of Justice, Cogdill went on to appear on NBC’s Today Show, CNBC, MSNBC, and CNN. She-Rain, a novel by Cogdill, is set in rural western North Carolina in the 1920s. In 2014, it was revealed that director Richard O’Sullivan had turned She-Rain into a feature picture, and that Cogdill’s HeartStrong Media, a production firm for movies and television, would be joining forces to create the project.
