Allen’s first position as a reporter was with the Fredericksburg Free Lance-Star. He has also worked for the Richmond Times-Dispatch, The Washington Post, The New York Times, and Time magazine. In April 2010, The New York Times referred to him as “The Man The White House Wakes Up To” in regard to his frequent correspondence with White House communications director Dan Pfeiffer. Prior to joining Politico at its inception in 2007, he worked for a variety of newspapers, including The New York Times and Time. According to the New York Times, Allen will no longer be writing the Playbook after July 11, 2016. Politico staffers Daniel Lippman, Anna Palmer, and Jake Sherman took over the writing.

Allen contributed to Politico, a Washington-based print and online journal created by Allbritton Communications, by writing the daily “Playbook.” The New York Times projected in April 2010 that Playbook brought in $780,000 for Politico. Allen was profiled in The New York Times Magazine on April 25, 2010, in an article titled “The Man the White House Wakes Up To.” Many believe him to be one of Washington’s most powerful and influential journalists. Allen was named by the Senate Armed Services Committee to the Afghanistan War committee in April 2022, a nonpartisan committee tasked with studying the entirety of US military actions in Afghanistan from 2001 to 2021.
