Wiley worked for the United States Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York’s Civil Division. Wiley was suggested as a possible NAACP president, but Cornell William Brooks was elected instead. She worked for the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund, the American Civil Liberties Union, and the Open Society Institute before being appointed attorney to Mayor Bill de Blasio. Wiley served as de Blasio’s counsel for two and a half years, during which time she became recognized for coining the term “agents of the city” in an attempt to keep de Blasio’s conversations with lobbyists from being made public. Wiley has lectured at The New School and served as a political and legal analyst on MSNBC. She also founded and served as president of the Center for Social Inclusion, a national policy strategy organization dedicated to dismantling structural racism.

Wiley ran for mayor of New York City in the Democratic primary in 2021. Former presidential candidates Julian Castro and Elizabeth Warren, as well as U.S. Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, backed Wiley in June 2021. The Strokes, whose song “Starting Again” was featured in a campaign advertisement, also endorsed her. On June 12, 2021, the band also performed a benefit concert at Irving Plaza. In the Democratic primary, Wiley finished third behind Eric Adams and Kathryn Garcia.
