He was one of five children born to Becky Mungle, a dairy farmer from Atoka and Jene. Mungle attended Atoka High School and graduated in 1975. He attended Oklahoma State University for two and a half years before relocating to Hollywood in 1977. He apprenticed with Joe Blasco, a make-up artist, and later became an instructor at Blasco’s school.

The publication of “Planet of the Apes” in 1968 revolutionized make-up effects and had a greater impact on the little town youngster from Atoka. It’s difficult to quantify how many times Matthew has seen the movie. What he did know was that he wanted to follow in the footsteps of his heroes, Lon Chaney, Sr., Jack Pierce, and John Chambers, who won an Academy Award for “Planet of the Apes” for their specialist make-up effects.
In 1977, Matthew landed in Hollywood. Matthew got admitted into Joe Blasco’s Make-Up Center, the exclusive academy that educates many of the film and television industry’s top make-up artists. He ultimately arrived in Hollywood late in 1977, and from February through May of 1978, he began his study.
His professional career began with low-budget productions like THE DORM THAT DRIPPED BLOOD, THE POWER, and THE KINDRED, where he learned to think rapidly on his feet. From 1987 through 1989, he directed many films, including WAR PARTY, SPLIT DECISION, and NAVY SEALS, but his first great triumph came in 1990 with EDWARD SCISSORHANDS. BRAM STOKER’S DRACULA, which earned him his first Academy Award nomination in 1992; SCHINDLER’S LIST, which earned him another nomination in 1993; creating Arnold’s pregnancy stomach in the comedy spoof JUNIOR; tackling special make-up effects for OUTBREAK, CONGO, PRIMAL FEAR, and aging James Woods to 72 in GHOSTS OF MISSISSIPPI. In 2011, he received his fourth Academy Award nomination for his portrayal of Glen Close and Janet McTeer in ALBERT NOBBS.
Aging has become one of Matthew’s strongest calling cards, as well as a difficult area of make-up effects. His curiosity about making someone appear older than they are led him to investigate more practical approaches, such as using gelatin, which was first utilized in the 1930s but was later abandoned because the intense lighting caused it to melt. Matthew has recreated the semi-translucent material, which when applied looks and moves like actual flesh, thanks to today’s less strong lighting and faster film.
Matthew’s skill in this highly specialized area of make-up effects led to a plethora of job chances in cinema and television, including HBO’s CITIZEN COHN, which starred James Woods and earned him his first Emmy in 1993. MISS EVERS’ BOYS received another nomination in 1997. In 1998, he received two more nominations for TNT’s WALLACE and ABC’s OLIVER TWIST, and in 1999 for his work on TNT’s HOUDINI. For his work on ABC’s THE BEAT GOES ON, Matthew received his Local’s first annual Local 706 Make-up and Hair Award in 2000. Matthew was contracted for special make-up and prosthetic designs on the X-FILES in 2000. Matthew earned an Emmy in 2001 for the show DEAD ALIVE, adding to his already impressive resume.
Matthew has been nominated for 26 Emmy Awards. Matthew continues to work on C.I.S. (CBS), NCIS (CBS), and the new WGN blockbuster series “Salem” despite a busy film and television schedule. One of Matthew’s most difficult tasks is designing the prosthetic face masks for the different characters in the hit Broadway show WICKED. Matthew taught a three-day advanced prosthetics session for SCREEN TRAINING IRELAND in Dublin in 1999.
