He began his career as an Australian TV journalist for IPC Magazines, writing on the soap operas Neighbours and Home and Away for TVTimes, What’s on TV, and Woman’s Own. Following that, he contributed to a variety of Australian trade newspapers held by IPC’s parent company, Reed Business Publishing, including Encore, Supermarket News, and Counterpoint.

Preston began writing reviews for a new Melbourne magazine, Inside Melbourne, in 1996, a position he kept until February 2000, when he moved on to write reviews for The Age. Preston was also a regular food journalist for a variety of publications, including Taste, a Herald Sun, The Courier-Mail, and The Daily Telegraph (Australia) newspaper supplement, and MasterChef Magazine, delectable.
