On June 11, 1969, McGrath was born in New York City into an Irish Catholic family whose parents were involved in local politics. He lived in Stuyvesant Town at first, then in Manhattan’s Hell’s Kitchen, and then for a short while in Albany, New York. After a year at Fordham University, he was persuaded to join the Circle Repertory Company by a professor.
