Mary Williams Career
While Williams never became an actress, she did follow in the footsteps of her adoptive mother in her other passion, social activism. She traveled to Tanzania and Morocco to work on various social causes before attending Boston University and earning a master’s degree in public health. Williams began her career as a fundraiser for the International Rescue Committee in Atlanta, where she worked with Sudanese refugees. She later founded the Lost Boys Foundation, an organization that assists Sudan’s Lost Boys. ‘Brothers in Hope: The Story of the Lost Boys of Sudan,’ her children’s book, was published in 2005. In 2013, she published ‘The Lost Daughter: A Memoir,’ a book about her relationship with her two families.
Williams worked in the International Rescue Committee’s Atlanta office as a fund-raiser. When she saw refugees coming in from Sudan, she developed a passion for working with them, eventually leaving her job with IRC in 2001 to work more closely with Sudanese refugees through her own organization. She founded the Lost Boys Foundation, an organization that works with Sudan’s Lost Boys to assist them after they have been displaced by the country’s wars and turbulence. At her urging, writer Dave Eggers approached Sudanese refugee Valentino Achak Deng, a Lost Boys Foundation program participant, about writing a memoir. What Is the What: Valentino Achak Deng’s Autobiography was eventually published.
Brothers in Hope: The Story of the Lost Boys of Sudan is a children’s book written by Williams about the Sudanese lost boys. Lee & Low Books published it. She supported Barack Obama’s reelection campaign for President of the United States in 2012. Williams, writing from Buenos Aires, stated, “As a product of the Black Power Movement, I can’t deny that I’m pleased to see a Black man in the White House, but my politics go deeper than that. I can’t sleep at night thinking about entrusting our national environmental treasures to people who only want to exploit them. I’m going to vote for Obama in November because we have too much at stake.”
