Mary Sue Milliken Restaurant
After collaborating in Chicago and Paris, Milliken and her longtime collaborator, Susan Feniger, relocated to Los Angeles in 1981 and opened the critically renowned City Café. They later moved to a larger premises on La Brea Avenue and renamed the business CITY Restaurant. Border Grill, a Mexican restaurant, started in the former City Café building in 1985 before moving to Santa Monica in 1990.
The restaurant then extended to Pasadena (since closed) and Las Vegas’ Mandalay Bay Resort. Milliken and her partner founded Ciudad in Los Angeles in 1998, expanding their culinary horizons. Because of the three restaurants’ popularity, Milliken and Feniger have frequently been credited with transforming the culinary landscape of Los Angeles on their own.

Milliken has produced five volumes with Feniger and others: City Cuisine (1989), Mesa Mexicana (1994), Cantina: The Best of Casual Mexican Cooking (1996), Cooking with Too Hot Tamales (1997), and Mexican Cooking for Dummies (1999/2002).
Milliken is also an experienced television personality, having been in 396 episodes of Too Hot Tamales and Tamales World Tour on the Food Network in the 1990s. Prior to their Food Network appearances, Milliken and Feniger featured with Julia Child in her PBS series Cooking With Master Chefs in 1993. Milliken and Feniger also made the meal featured in the 2001 film Tortilla Soup.In 1993, Milliken and Feniger were part of a team of sixteen chefs on Julia Child’s Cooking With Master Chefs.
Milliken most recently appeared in the third season of Top Chef Masters, which aired in 2011. She came in first place and received $40,000 for her charity, Share Our Strength. She was a co-recipient of The Julia Child Foundation for Gastronomy and the Culinary Arts’ 2018 Julia Child Award.
