Berry was the youngest of three children born to Margaret and Alleyne William Steward Berry. Alleyne was a surveyor and planner who was Mayor of Bath in 1952 and was instrumental in the establishment of the University of Bath at Claverton Down. In the 1860s, Mary’s great-great-grandfather on her father’s side, Robert Houghton, was a professional baker who supplied bread to a local workhouse in Norwich.

She went to Bath High School, where she characterized her scholastic ability as “hopeless” until she took domestic science lessons with Miss Date, who was very supportive of her cooking abilities. Her first class creation was a treacle sponge pudding, which she carried home and her father said was as excellent as her mother’s. She then attended Bath College of Domestic Science to study catering.

Berry’s first work was at the Bath Electricity Board showroom, followed by house visits to demonstrate how to use electric ovens to new customers. She would generally demonstrate the ovens by preparing a Victoria sponge, a practice she would subsequently replicate in television studios to try out a new oven.
