The Winans Academy of Performing Arts, abbreviated “WAPA” by staff and students, was founded in 1997 by Winans, a pastor. He founded The Perfecting Church in Detroit, Michigan, in 1989. He released Introducing Perfected Praise, an album that featured the church choir. In 2001, Friends, a follow-up album, was released. His 2007 album, Alone but Not Alone, was nominated for a Grammy for Best Contemporary R&B Gospel Album. On Saturday, February 18, 2012, at noon (EST), Winans delivered the eulogy at Whitney Houston’s funeral at New Hope Baptist Church in Newark, New Jersey. Marvin L. Winans presents The Praise + Worship Experience, his fourth album, was released by MLW Productions and was recorded at his church, Perfecting Church.
In the 1970s, the Testimonial Singers, which included Winans’ older brothers Ronald, Carvin (his twin), and Michael, performed music. They made their public debut at a high school talent show.
