Albert began his career as a ball boy for the New York Knicks before working his first Knicks game as a broadcaster on WCBS Radio on January 27, 1963. Marty Glickman, his mentor, was away in Europe, so he stepped in. The game was at the Boston Garden against the Celtics. Albert was the radio and television voice of the New York Knicks for 37 years before being fired by James L. Dolan, the chairman of the MSG Network and Cablevision, after criticizing the team’s poor play on-air in 2004.
Albert was the lead play-by-play broadcaster for the NBA on NBC from 1990 to 2002, calling every NBA Finals except 1998, 1999, and 2000, which were called by Bob Costas following Albert’s arrest for sexual assault. Albert returned to his previous role for the 2000-2001 season, calling Game 4 of the 2002 NBA Finals, the final NBA telecast on NBC.
