Marty Career
As a youngster, his weekend job was to deliver “gifts” to cops and judges on behalf of his father. Pollio, who graduated from St. Xavier High School in Louisville, was in his third year of a four-year apprenticeship as an electrician when he abruptly quit to become an actor. While attending theatrical classes at the University of Louisville, he studied movement theatre and mime with Avner Eisenberg (Avner the Eccentric), followed by Israeli mime Yaakov Noy in Los Angeles. His performing career began in 1977 as a wandering artist at the amusement park Opryland USA in Nashville, Tennessee. Once his act was set to music, he began performing what he dubbed “bar mime.” He did his act alongside impressionist Bill Sacra.
He changed his presentation as the number of comedy clubs in the United States increased, although he is still most recognized for his physical comedy rather than his stand-up. Pollio has also worked as a movement instructor with the National Theatre of the Deaf, which won a Tony Award. He presented his one-man play Prisoners of Cheese at the Montreal Fringe Festival and produced the comedy/instructional film How To Juggle and Other Cheap Tricks, which is extensively distributed by View film.
