Martin Short is an actor, writer, and comedian of Canadian-American nationality well-known and gregarious comedian who rose to fame in sketch comedy. In addition, he has performed in a lot of TV series and movies. Among the honors he has won are two Primetime Emmys and a Tony Award. In 2019, Short was appointed an Officer of the Order of Canada.

Short was born on March 26, 1950, in Hamilton, Ontario. She was the youngest of five children born to Charles Patrick Short, a corporate executive at the Canadian steel company Stelco, and Olive Grace, a concertmistress at the Hamilton Symphony Orchestra. Patrick Short had immigrated from Crossmaglen, South Armagh, Ireland as a stowaway during the Irish War of Independence. Short has been candid in discussing his father’s battles with alcoholism.
Short was brought up as a Catholic, as were his siblings, which included an older sister named Nora and three older brothers named David, Michael, and Brian. When Short was twelve years old in 1962, his older brother David was murdered in an automobile accident in Montréal. Short’s mother supported him in his early artistic endeavors. He attended Westdale Secondary School and then earned a Bachelor of Arts in Social Work from McMaster University in 1971. Meanwhile, his father passed away from complications following a stroke two years later, and his mother passed away from cancer in 1968. Michael, his brother, went on to work as a comedy writer, spending time at Second City Television (SCTV). He has been nominated for an Emmy Award in comedy sketch writing 17 times, winning three of them.

In 1972, Short got to know Canadian comedic actress Nancy Dolman while Godspell was touring. In 1980, the couple tied the knot. To raise their family and become a stay-at-home mother, Dolman left the entertainment industry in 1985. Henry, Oliver, and Katherine were the three adopted children of Short and Dolman. Dolman passed away on August 21, 2010, from ovarian cancer. Since then, Bob Dolman and Andrea Martin separated in 2004. Short is the first cousin of Clare Short, a former British cabinet minister and member of the British Parliament.

Short Saturday Night Live
Short began appearing on Saturday Night Live (SNL) in 1984–1985. With his numerous personas for season ten, which was Dick Ebersol’s final production, he contributed to the show’s rebirth. Many of his SCTV roles from his days on the show continued to appear in his Saturday Night Live characters, most famously Ed Grimley, who was portrayed as a nerdy everyman obsessed with Wheel of Fortune, a triangle player, and prone to strange situations rather than a miscast bad actor in a number of TV series and movies parodies (The Completely Mental Misadventures of Ed Grimley used the SNL characterization of him rather than the SCTV take on him). In addition, he performed impressions of Katharine Hepburn and Jerry Lewis. He has since been on the program several times, most notably on the Saturday Night Live 40th Anniversary Special in 2015 and the SNL Christmas special in 2012.

He portrayed a disgraced director named Dick Lundy in a dark role on the Apple TV+ series The Morning Show from 2019 to 2021. “Short is a damn fine dramatic actor,” Deadline Hollywood’s Damon Wise commented, praising his “brief but indelible guest role.” Regarding the character, Short stated, “Well, the producers contacted me and asked if I could play it. I was intrigued by these right away, though I’m not sure why exactly. Conversations and discussions around the MeToo movement really excite me.
Short was nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama Series for his performance. From 2021 to 2023, he also made an appearance as a Leprechaun in Schmigadoon!, an Apple TV+ sitcom. In the Netflix animated film The Willoughbys (2020), Short played the rude parent parent Willoughby, and in the 2019 television series The Addams Family, he portrayed Grandpa Frump. In the Nancy Meyers-directed short film Father of the Bride Part 3(ish) (2020), he also played Franck Eggelhoffer again.
