Martin Donovan is an American actor most known for his work with filmmaker Hal Hartley, which includes films such as Trust, Surviving Desire, Simple Men, Amateur, Flirt, and The Book of Life. He also appeared as Peter Scottson on Weeds and made his writing/directing debut with Collaborator (2011). Donovan has also appeared in Christopher Nolan’s psychological thrillers Insomnia and Tenet.

He appeared as Virgil Davenport in the American supernatural horror television series Archive 81. Dan, a conservator, is requested to work on a Hi8 cassette. The tape is for Virgil Davenport of the LMG corporation, and Virgil invites him to restore the remaining recordings. Though he thinks it unusual that Virgil is aware that Dan’s family died in a fire when he was young, he accepts.

Because the cassettes are too fragile to move, he relocates to an LMG-owned research campus. Virgil gives Dan a wristband that can alert emergency medical personnel because there is no Internet or cell service, and Dan has a history of mental illness. Melody searches for Jess, a child from the building who she thinks was abducted. Dan’s father enters as she is arguing with the guards and attempts to calm her down. Dan is taken aback by his father’s connection. It is revealed that Dan is being monitored.
