Before joining ABC, he worked as the Chief Asia Correspondent for NBC News, where he was responsible for covering important East Asian and Chinese current events on a daily basis. He also contributed in-depth pieces about China’s evolving political, economic, and cultural landscape. Mullen has also traveled to combat zones to share his experiences from Iraq. He has reported on topics from both Europe and the United States, including Hurricane Katrina and the aftermath of 9/11. In addition, he has used his flying background to report on significant aircraft accidents. Mullen studied journalism and Spanish from 1981 to 1987 at Loyola University in New Orleans. His first position was with Mississippi’s WLOX-TV as an anchor and reporter, the Gulf Coast-based regional ABC affiliate.

Mullen relocated to KRON in San Francisco in 1991 after leaving KDFW in Dallas in 1989. He was promoted to lead the national ABC nighttime news program World News Now in 1997. Following periods in Seattle and back at KRON, he went back to local reporting until joining NBC reporting as a national correspondent in 2003. As NBC’s first full-time correspondent in China since Ned Colt left in 2004, Mullen took up a position in Beijing at the end of 2006. The new position was a component of NBC’s bureau expansion there, which was connected to the network’s endeavor to raise awareness of China ahead of the 2008 Olympic Games on irs coverage.

Mullen produced many noteworthy pieces while in Beijing, including a week-long “China Rising” series on “NBC Nightly News” that looked at China’s changing face in light of the October 2007 Communist Party Congress. Mullen also participated in NBC’s “Today” and “Nightly News” annual run of Olympic countdown shows. His live stand-up performance on August 8 from Tiananmen Square marked the first time the square has been televised live since the 1989 Chinese government crackdown on student protesters.
