She worked as a foreign correspondent for the Today show from 1990 to 1992 and as a news anchor from 1992 to 1994 before returning as a journalist for Dateline NBC. She spent the last decade of her journalism career helping and serving on the board of Mercy Corps, an international relief organization. After a brief time as an anchor at Seattle’s KIRO-TV, she joined KING-TV in the mid-1990s. In 2002, she left KING-TV to work full-time as Mercy Corps’ Vice President of Communications. Larson eventually left this job to work as an independent contractor for foreign relief organizations, broadening her focus on Africa and HIV/AIDS issues. Larson has advised for Mercy Corps, World Vision, Global Partnerships, and PATH.
