Marc Tarpenning is an entrepreneur and engineer from the United States. In 2003, he co-founded Tesla Inc. with Martin Eberhard. Tarpenning worked for Textron in Saudi Arabia for several years after graduating from Berkeley. Tarpenning went on to work for many firms, including Seagate Technology and Bechtel, developing software and firmware, and later serving as vice president of engineering at Packet Design, a network technology business. Tarpenning and Martin Eberhard formed NuvoMedia in 1997, a company that produced the RocketBook, an early electronic book, in 1998. NuvoMedia was purchased for $187 million by Gemstar–TV Guide International in 2000.

Tarpenning and Martin Eberhard teamed up again in 2003 to form Tesla Motors. The company was founded by the two co-founders until early 2004, when Elon Musk-led a $6.5 million Series A funding round and became Chairman of the Board. Until 2008, Tarpenning worked at Tesla as the Chief Financial Officer and Vice President of Electrical Engineering. Tarpenning started working as an adviser or member of the advisory board of many companies after leaving Tesla, including his alma mater and Spero Ventures, a venture capital company. Tarpenning serves on the advisory board of Clearpath Robotics, a maker of autonomous vehicles.
