Marc Randolph Career

Randolph’s first job after graduating from college was at Cherry Lane Music Company in New York in 1981. Randolph, who was put in charge of the company’s small mail-order operation, taught himself direct mail and marketing techniques while experimenting with different ways to sell Cherry Lane’s catalog of sheet music directly to consumers. Randolph’s interest in using computer software to track customers’ purchasing behavior would eventually influence his decision to create a user interface at Netflix that also functioned as a market research platform. He expanded on his theories about using direct mail to influence and retain customers while doing circulation work for the US version of MacUser magazine in 1984.

Randolph made the connection between overnight delivery and improved customer retention while co-founding computer mail-orders firms MacWarehouse and MicroWarehouse with Peter Godfrey and his partners about a year later. The discovery was later critical to Netflix’s growth and survival: the company’s subscriber base first grew and cut into Blockbuster Inc revenues in cities where Netflix offered overnight DVD delivery. Beginning in 1988, Randolph spent the early days of the Internet building direct-to-consumer marketing operations at software giant Borland International. He left Borland in 1995 for a series of brief stints at Silicon Valley start-ups, including marketing director at desktop scanner maker Visioneer and founding team member of Integrity QA, a developer of automated software testing products.

Randolph has volunteered at MiddCORE as a mentor.  and a Looker Data Sciences board member. He is also the Belk Entrepreneurship Center’s Entrepreneur in Residence at High Point University. Aside from mentoring, he is a keynote speaker on entrepreneurship, leadership, and innovation. He travels the world speaking about his Netflix experience and the lessons he has learned from his other startup investments. That Will Never Work: The Birth of Netflix and the Amazing Life of an Idea was published by Little, Brown, and Company in September 2019.
