Murphy attended the Institute of Culinary Education in New York after completing his education at Fryeburg Academy in 1988. He worked as a line cook at Prix Fixe in New York at the beginning of his career. He was a sous-chef at Layla in New York by the middle of the 1990s, and in 1996, he was promoted to executive chef at Cellar in the Sky, also in New York. From 1997 to 2000, he was the co-proprietor and chief culinary specialist of La Fourchette. He also became the partner and co-owner of Le Couteau in 2000 and the executive chef at Chinoiserie.
Murphy has appeared on numerous shows, including Iron Chef America, Guy’s Grocery Games, Beat Bobby Flay, Unique Eats, The Best Thing I Ever Ate, The Best Thing I Ever Made, Rachael Ray, and Today, in addition to playing a regular role as a judge on Chopped. He is the president of the New York State Restaurant Association’s Manhattan chapter. Murphy joined the Diplomatic Culinary Partnership of the United States Department of State in 2012. There, he participates in public diplomacy programs that engage both domestic and international audiences.
