Athie was born in Mauritania, the son of a diplomat father who was granted political refuge in the United States when he was six months old. Athie grew up in New Carrollton, Maryland, just outside of Washington, DC. He studied acting at the William Esper Studio’s Two-Year Professional Actor Training Program before earning his MFA from Yale School of Drama, where he graduated in 2014.
