She began her career as a teenager with small appearances in several of her father’s films, and she co-starred alongside her brother in the cult classic Donnie Darko (2001). She made her theatrical debut in Patrick Marber’s Closer at the Berkeley Repertory Theatre.

Gyllenhaal made her film debut at the age of fifteen in 1992, in the film ‘Waterland,’ directed by her father. Her father directed her next two films, ‘A Dangerous Woman’ (1993) and ‘Homegrown’ (1998), which also starred her brother. In 1998, she also participated in the television film “The Patron Saint of Liars.” She made her stage debut in ‘Closer’ in 2000 and appeared as a supporting actress in ‘Cecil B. Demented’ in 2000 and ‘Riding in Cars with Boys’ in 2001. Maggie garnered a lot of praise for her role in ‘Donnie Darko’ in 2001. Secretary’ in 2002 catapulted her to popularity, and she received her first award for her performance.

Gyllenhaal went on to star in the films ‘Confessions of a Dangerous Mind’ (2002), ‘Casa de los Babys’  , and ‘Mona Lisa Smile’ (2003) before returning to the big screen with ‘Homebody/Kabul’ in 2003.
