Career
Cassella left the legal profession after nearly 10 years of working with AIDS cases, transitional issues around marriage, and bringing a test case for homosexual adoption to Connecticut. Cassella’s stand-up comedy approach consisted of rants and raves. Cassella discovered that she could receive an endless amount of material by simply reading the news. She settled on her Because I Said So format of sit-down comedy, tearing through news themes ranging from law, entertainment, technology, religion, and closing with things she simply found irritating. She spent 20 summers performing Because I Said So in Provincetown and other parts of North America.
Cassella eventually found a full-time career and the love of her life. She was one of the initial on-air personalities on STAR! and later went on to host her own talk show, Because I Said So. BISS, as it was known around the station, allowed Cassella to have some fun when interviewing celebrities. Despite the fact that BISS failed, she continues to conduct those interviews as a field producer for the syndicated US entertainment show Extra during the Toronto International Film Festival. Cassella has interviewed comedy icons Phyllis Diller, Bea Arthur, and Joan Rivers, as well as actors William H. Macy, Jude Law, Juliette Binoche, Robert Downey Jr., Laura Linney, Eartha Kitt, and k.d. lang.
Cassella produced and hosted six episodes of The Vent!, a thirty-minute show she co-created and produced that explores a single topic from multiple perspectives. Her production company, A Sweet Little Production Company, is based in Toronto, and she continues to develop series and films. In addition to performing together, the two have cowritten a book and two scripts. Cassella was a co-owner of The Flying Beaver Pubaret, a restaurant and performance space on Parliament Street in Toronto’s Cabbagetown district, until it was permanently closed due to a fire on February 20, 2015. She plays Dr. Mulberry, the lesbian character in the 2019 adaptation of Clifford the Big Red Dog.
